Got a new Disc Extreme!

Post by Blacktail » September 28th, 2012, 10:02 pm

Hey everyone,

Just bought a new Disc Extreme last week. I am really looking forward to getting this gun set up and dialed in. Hoping to find a good sabot load and get her ready for deer next season.

It is a .50 cal. Was thinking about starting off with Hornady XTP bullets. Any suggestions for starting out? I am shooting with #11 CCI magnum caps and loose ffg 777. No optics or 209's for me in Washington.

It would be my suggestion that you see if you can find some Speer Deep Curls vs. the XTP's the Deep Curls are bonded and have a form of controlled expansion built into the bullet, I call them a 'poor mans nosler partition'

From your Extreme you might try 110 grain load and MMP HPH-24 sabot...

They may be hard to find - vendors can not keep them on the shelf to long and Speer loves it...

Here is a picture of some torture tested Deep Curls...

Thanks Sabot!

I forgot my password so had to register again. I contacted you on HuntWa last week. Once the modern rifle season ends I will be working on muzzleloader loads in earnest. Thanks again!

The Speers hold up much better than the XTPs in my tests too. There is a older UniCor 300gr version with a flat point that is easier to find and its really cheap. The Speer part# is 4485. Their website has it listed as jacketed but it is a Unicor.

Thanks GMB I will keep an eye out for those. Do you have a particular sabot in mind for the Speer bullet?

Thanks,

Same as SabotLoader suggested, the MMP HPH-24. Harvester Black smooth (for under 300gr) would be my next choice.

Where would a guy go about finding these sabots? Locally I can find Hornady sabots and MidwayUSA has crushed rib sabots. I do not see the same model number though. Where an I find these HPH-24 sabots?

Thanks for the help guys.

MMP HPH-24

Harvester Short Black

Hornady also rebrands some MMP sabots but i don't know which one is the HPH-24. Midsouth sells the HPH-12s which are a little tighter than the 24s.

Great! I thought they were made by Harvester and could not find a model number that matched up.

Thanks,

Blacktail, i sent you a PM but im not sure it went through.

Those Black Crushribs might work but i normally use those with a .458 300gr bullet. They load pretty tight though in most bores with a .458 and kinda loose with a .452. I resize my .458s to .454 and get a perfect fit in a .500-.501 bore. The Smooth black works just as well or better and its a little cheaper.
