Pet Loads for long range shooting

Post by NuJudge » February 23rd, 2012, 6:41 am

I've had a Disc Extreme for some time now, but shot it little. I've experimented with various sabots and bullets, and mostly used BlackHorn 209 powder with Winchester and CCI 209 primers. My results have been good, but not great beyond about 175 yards. I'm interested in what other people use to get better groups at 200 yards and beyond.

Perhaps I should have posted this under LONG RANGE HUNTER...but it's still pretty much the same system. One of my very repeatable accuracy loads for .50 DISC type rifles has been 110-grains of Blackhorn 209 behind the saboted 300-grain Harvester Muzzleloading "Scorpion PT Gold". At the muzzle of the 27-inch LRH barrel, it's good for 1,968 f.p.s., with 2,577 f.p.e. At 100 yards, the rifle...load...and I can usually keep groups averaging close to 1-inch across. And at 200 yards, I've been able to punch a number of 2 to 3 inch groups...with regularity. Toby Bridges

I guess I am a bit surprised that you might be having a problem with shooting accurately past 175 yards. Most every thing I shoot from my Extremes will reach the 200 yard mark with really good accuracy.

Right now I am shooting the Lehigh/Bloodline .458-300 gr. DOA in a MMP Orange sabot. I am not a BH fan, only because of cost and I know that it is a very good powder, but I choose to shoot 120 grains T7-2f with a w209 primer. Before switching to the Lehigh/Bloodline I shot the same load with a .458-300 grain Nosler Partition and it shot very well to 200+ yards.

Is there a possibilty that your barrel might be touching a point in the barrel channel? Assuming that your barrel is floated... And if it is not a little un-equal pressure on the side or the bottom of the barrel + then add a little bit of heat causing some expansion and you might get some accuracy problems at 200 that do not show at 100 yards.

I do not know if any of this applys but I thought i would throw out some thoughts...

I have the extreme 50cal got it new and when I hate around 100 round on it they opened up to around 2" to 3" groups at 100yds so I floated the barrel and bedded the action and know it will stay 1" and under at 100yds and this helped my 200yd groups out a hole lot I use 120gr BH209 and 290gr tmz and Harvester yellow crush rib sabots works will in my gun

Owned a .50 cal disc extreme thumb hole synthetic stock with GM stainless barrel for 4 years now. I have not been able to get a good group at 100 yards no matter what type of bullet or powder I used. Since the stock is synthetic I never had a real close look at any pressure points between the barrel and the stock, until I read the post here. So thanks for the heads up. Looked at the barrel and there are marks on it from the barrel along both sides. I also noticed that the spring plate attached to the front sling screws is worn from being black to silver. Seems that flat spring is used to float the barrel??
Ok, so do I need to float the barrel? Looking for suggestions on improving the groups, which I should of mentioned earlier are at 100 yards anywhere from 2 inch to 3.5 inch groups.

I shoot Knight Extreme since many years and the best accuracy was with Barnes Expander 300gr with 90gr.BH209 and a Federal A primer.Dead on at 100 yards.Shot a 140 lbs dressed doe at 100 yards and a complete pass-through and made around 50 feet and drop dead.

My best long range loads in my Knights are as follows
Disc 1:20 twist , 120 gr Blackhorn , 230 gr brass bullet or 260 gr dead center 40/45 bullet
Mountaineer: 120 gr Blackhorn or 130 gr 777 . 200 gr shockwave or 250 gr shockwave
Disc extreme 130 gr 777 290 gr barnes TMZ or 250 gr shockwave.
all of these loads have taken deer at long range and proven to be very accurate.

I use the parker 327 gr with 100 gr x777
300 all day with globe sight with williams legend rear.
With zero wind, i would have no problem on a 12"target @400.

Have fun.

Good luck getting any expansion with that load and a Parker MH at that range. The jacket is roughly .028 and made from gilding metal not softer copper.

Its designed for a Velocity range of 2250-3000 fps at the muzzle and you are not anywhere near that with 100gr of T7.
Green Mountain 54-120 Brush Gun
