Recieved New Rifle

Post by Randy803 » November 16th, 2015, 11:19 am

My new Mountaineer .45 caliber rifle came in last week and I had a chance to take it to the field for sight in yesterday. I mounted a Nightforce SHV 4x14 30mm Scope with a 56mm objective on the rifle and steel Knightforce rings and bases. Loaded Hornady SST 200gr .40 cal bullets with the white sabots. Powder was 100grs of Blackhorn 209 with W209 primers. I bore sighted the rifle and had it zeroed within 3 shots. I zeroed at 100 yards and was getting 2200FPS +- 100fps at the muzzle. 3 shot Groups were consistently under 1 inch! I am a very happy customer. Amazingly low recoil but the rifle is pretty heavy with my scope setup. I have to tell you I am surprised that a muzzle loader can shoot like this but I am glad it does!

OK Knight now I NEED one of these rifles in a 1:20 or 1:18 twist so I can shoot paper patch bullets out to 1000yrds..... ILL PAY just build it! :)

2200fps with 100gr of BH209?

Thats quite a bit higher than typical. Ive been shooting Knight 45s for years with Blackhorn209. I don't shoot sabots much anymore though. Parker bullets sized to my bore shot sabotless are amazingly accurate.

Yes I thought it was on the fast side but that is what the crono is reading.... Are you paper patching those bullets? Knight told me their rifles were "MADE" for sabots and that is where I would get the most accuracy. Interesting....

No paper patch. Just a Parker 275 BE sized to fit my bore and a .060 fiber wad over the powder. Its the same load Mark Miller used in his 1-30 at Friendships Inline match not long ago. Sabotless is really easy if you get an adjustable sizing die from Swinglock.

I also shoot .451 lead conicals from 350gr to 488gr in my 1-20 with around 70gr of BH209 and a fiber wad. They shoot fantastic too. A 1-30 will handle at least a 405gr conical with no problems. I know of people shooting a 460 or 465gr in theirs.

Your speed seems high especially if you are using the tan sabots. My old Elite was shooting a 200gr SST between 2250 and 2300fps with 120gr of BH209. It shot a little better with 5-10gr less so i didn't spend much time experimenting with 120gr load combinations. My Super DISC 45 seems to love 120gr loads sabotless as long as the bullet has a thin jacket and the lead core isn't too hard.
