mk and BH209

Any tips on how to make the 209 conversion work consistently with Blackhorn 209? In limited range sessions, it has been inconsistent in ignition with hangfires. The breech plug is one that has the vent liner brazen permently into it. Is the flash channel too long? Or is the problem with using the red jackets?

Any help or suggestions would be great.

Thanks,

Don't unless you like picking the primer pieces out of your head. BH209 is made for closed breach MLs only. You may get lucky and you may not. Ive tried it and occasionally the primer would fly off and almost recock the hammer assembly.

The best answer is....Don't use BH209 in a MK85. It is dangerous and it will not work properly in a "plunger" action. Western Powders specifically says to use in a enclosed breach.

The solution is simple, get a DISC Extreme with a bare primer conversion or use Triple7 in the MK.

I can tell you I tried it but would not advise it. At any given time yu can blow the primer out of the breech plug a create a missle that could come your way. And at other times it works OK... BH is such a slow burning powder it creates a longer period of blow back pressure that pushed the primer back into the hammer - blows it back which then allows the primer to fly out of the breech plug...

Here is a composite that shows the activity

You can see I stretched a piece of leather over the breech area to keep the parts in...

Please look at the rifle recommendations for BH at Western Powders or even call them and ask...

Megavinn,

See my response under the same topic in the General Muzzleloader Talk section.
